On me demande de plus en plus si j’utilise l’intelligence artificielle pour créer mes photos et je trouve ça plutôt drôle.
Le weekend passé lors de la convention nationale des photographes professionnels du Canada, deux conférenciers, dont le keynote, parlait de manipulation d’images et d’intelligence artificielle. Ce qui démontre que ça devient tranquillement chose commune. La manipulation d’image n’est pas une nouvelle technique on s’entend mais si on rajoute les nouvelles possibilités de l’intelligence artificielle, plus rien n’est impossible. J’aime dire en riant, que bientôt nos compétitions vont bientôt avoir besoin d’une nouvelle catégorie : la photographie. C’est drôle mais pas tant que ça.
Tant qu’à moi … une fenêtre, une lumière, un sujet et c’est bien suffisant. Bien sûr, j’utilise Photoshop pour les corrections de base mais c’est tout. J’essaie de traiter mes photos comme dans le temps du film donc rien de bien extrême. Ajustement de la densité, la couleur et contraste local.
Ma conférence à Victoria portait sur ce sujet et beaucoup de gens sont venus me voir après en me disant qu’ils étaient surpris (et heureux) de voir qu’on pouvait encore faire de belles photos sans avoir recours aux nouvelles technologies. Je trouve ça un peu épeurant parce que ça démontre comment la technologie envahit nos vies à grande vitesse.
J’essaie d’appliquer le principe de la simplicité dans tout ce que je fais. Comme disait l’autre, simple ça marche. Oui c’est le fun de voir tout ce qu’on peut faire maintenant grâce à l’avancement technologique mais une approche simplifiée et honnête va toujours avoir sa place, que ce soit en photographie ou dans la vie en général.
Voici un avant-goût de notre prochain projet photo. Remarquez qu’on utilise du vrai maquillage, un vrai chapeau fait à la main par Gabrielle-Anne et bien sûr, la sympathique binette de l’ami Carl et ce devant une simple fenêtre, sans flash et sans transformation exagérée. Il ne me manque que quelques accessoires pour pouvoir faire la séance finale : un gilet/manteau à l’allure de pirate, une épée et des chaînes/pendantifs. Si jamais vous avez ça qui traine chez-vous … 😉
Keeping it simple …
More and more people ask me if I use artificial intelligence to create my photos and I think it’s pretty funny.
Last weekend at the National Convention of Professional Photographers of Canada, two speakers, including the keynote speaker, talked about image manipulation and artificial intelligence. Which just goes to show that it’s slowly becoming commonplace. Image manipulation is not a new technique, of course, but when you add in the new possibilities of artificial intelligence, nothing is impossible. I like to joke that our competitions will soon need a new category: photography. It’s funny, but not that funny.
As far as I’m concerned … a window, a light, a subject and that’s quite enough. Of course, I use Photoshop for basic corrections, but that’s it. I try to treat my photos like film, so nothing too extreme. Density, color and local contrast, that’s about it.
My lecture in Victoria was on this subject and a lot of people came up to me afterwards saying they were surprised (and happy) to see that you could still make beautiful photos without using new technologies. I find it a bit frightening because it shows how technology is invading our lives at such a fast pace.
I try to apply the principle of simplicity in everything I do. As the other guy said, simple works. Yes, it’s fun to see all the things we can do now thanks to technological advances, but a simplified, honest approach will always have its place, whether in photography or in life in general.
Here’s a taste of our next photo project. Note that we’re using real make-up, a real hat handmade by Gabrielle-Anne and, of course, friend Carl’s friendly hoe, all in front of a simple window, with no flash and no exaggerated transformation. I’m only missing a few accessories for the final session: a pirate-style vest/coat, a sword and chains/pendants. If you have any of these lying around … 😉
